Attention General Aviation Pilots:

With all the new software and hardware available to you in the cockpit, the FAA recently issued some new guidance to those wishing to take advantage of the IPADs (and other electronic devices).  On June 1, 2012, the FAA released the final version of AC 120-76B.  This AC applies to what is termed as “Portable Electronic Flight Bags.”  It also describes the term “Portable Electronic Devices.”

The AC applies to operations in piston or turboprop aircraft with a maximum gross weight less than 12,500 lbs. Part 91F of the FARs also applies to large, multi-engine turbojets.

Essentially, the FAA has allowed that the IPAD is a legally acceptable replacement for using paper charts in the cockpit for most Part 91 general aviation pilots.

For more, see:

FAR 91.21 (Portable Electronic Devices or PEDS)

AC 91-21.1B (Use of PEDS aboard Aircraft)

AC 91-78 (Use of Class 1 or Class 2 Electronic Flight Bags (EFB)

AC  120-76 Guidelines for the Certification, Airworthiness and Operational Use of EFBs (This AC does not apply to FAA part 91 piston engine aircraft operations, but  may be used as some guidance when using an IPAD as a paper chart replacement)
